Niles 1. Here is the 20th of 20 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1985, a K-4SA (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata as a K-4S in March of 1918, later rebuilt as a K-4SA, and retired in November of 1956 after 38 years of service. In this context, it's parked at the Passenger Station awaiting its next eastbound assignment. Wave to the Fireman! Some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings are visible in the background. Shown here is an unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad "T" Class (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" steam locomotives pulling a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East.

Niles 1. Here is the seventh of 20 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4680, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in November of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in September of 1942, and retired in February of 1952 after 29 years of faithful service. In this context, it's pulling a rail grinding train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains toward Altoona. Wave to the Fireman! (#2 of 2)
